Joy Chang is an award-winning video journalist, producer and documentary filmmaker. Previously based in New York and Hong Kong, she has covered stories on China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the US.
Her reporting in the US focused on the Asian American communities, Hong Kong's overseas democracy advocacy and US-China relations. In Hong Kong, she spent much of her time covering the aftermath of the 2019 protests, with a focus on those who were arrested because of the demonstrations and their life after prison release. Joy is interested in Cross-Strait relations and the geopolitical developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
Her video feature about Kinmen, Taiwan’s frontline islands with China, won one Gold and two Bronze medals at the 2023 Telly Awards. She is also the winner of Documentary Video (Chinese) in the Human Rights Press Awards 2024. Her video about the Chinese migrants trying to make their way to the US via Central and South America, one of the first visual projects on this topic, won the team an honourable mention at the 2024 SOPA Awards for Excellence in Video Reporting.
Joy's work appeared in the BBC, South China Morning Post, The Wall Street Journal, Deutsche Welle, CBC News, Wainao (Radio Free Asia), VOA, Channel News Asia, Ketagalan Media, The New York Times, Taipei Times, and more. She is currently based in Taiwan.
